About Lab Grown Diamonds:

  • Lab grown diamonds have been around since the 1950’s, these were not gem quality and were used for industrial purposes.
  • Only in the last decade have scientists been able to grow gem quality diamonds. Quality that can be used in jewellery.
  • Technology has come a long way, now we can grow gem quality diamonds in all shapes and sizes above the ground in a laboratory. Which will change the diamond industry forever.

  • There are two methods used to grow diamonds:
    1. CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) method, the diamond is grown from a TypeIIA diamond seed.
    2. HPHT (High Temperature High Pressure) method, the diamond is grown from a metal catalyst.
  • CVD lab grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds.
  • They have the same chemical composition and molecular structure as mined diamonds.
  • According to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) CVD lab grown diamonds are “DIAMONDS”.
  • Your standard diamonds tester used in store will test CVD lab grown diamonds as “DIAMOND”, not “moisanite, simulant or CZ”.
  • HPHT lab grown diamonds will not always say “DIAMOND” when tested on your in store diamond tester, they may test as moisanite, simulant or CZ, DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT, as this may harm your business.
  • Always ask your supplier if they are supplying you a lab grown diamond that is “HPHT” or “CVD” grown. There is a big difference and this should reflect in the cost.
  • Larger HPHT lab grown diamonds can contain a metal catalyst and sometimes even stick to a magnet.
  • CVD lab grown diamonds, on the other hand are grown from a TypeIIA seed, the original seeds actually came from a TypeIIA mined diamond. These are very pure and rare in nature.
  • No human in the world can tell them apart, only sophisticated technology
  • The major difference between a TypeIIA CVD grown diamond and a mined diamond is that one comes from below the ground and the other from above the ground.
  • All certified JC Jewels lab grown diamonds above 0.30cts are CVD TypeIIA.
  • With HPHT lab grown diamond the colour is controlled, thus higher colours are readily available, so always ask your suppliers the question, “is this an HPHT or CVD diamond”, they are not the same, you need to know!
  • Like mined diamonds, when we grow CVD TypeIIA diamond, we get VERY FEW HIGHER COLOURS, “D, E and F colours are very rare”, like in nature we have very little control over the colour, when we growing diamonds using the CVD growing method.
  • Transparency is essential, always make sure your client knows what they are buying, always disclose what you are offering your clients, that is “mined or lab grown”, CVD or HPHT grown diamonds.

  • Lab grown diamonds have two very attractive features.
    1. We know their exact origin, they are totally conflict free, and with lab grown diamonds there will always be no concern about blood diamonds.
    2. Sustainability orhumans working together with nature, by growing diamonds, we don’t need to remove tones of earth from the ground, to find them.
  • TypeIIA is the rarest and purest type of diamond crystal.
  • TypeIIA diamonds will sparkle more and shine brighter.
  • Less than 2% of all diamonds ever found in nature are Type IIA.
  • TypeIIA diamonds found in nature sell at high premiums.
  • TypeIIA diamonds have negligible amounts of Nitrogen, least amounts of impurities, especially Nitrogen, this is why they are so pure and sparkle more.
  • Lab Grown Diamonds generally cost 30-40% less than mined diamonds, but look exactly the same, for the most part this is because of the high costs involved in mining, removing tons of earth to find the diamonds.
